A Visit from the Rav - by Sam Greenberg, 11th grade, Stern HHS

On Friday, September 22, a slight change was made in the daily schedule at Stern Hebrew High School. Instead of the usual Friday Parsha shiur delivered by a faculty member, Rabbi Aaron Felder of Bnai Israel- Ohev Zedek came to address the student body.

As it was Erev Rosh Hashanah, Rabbi Felder spoke regarding the important nature of the day as well as the Aseres Yimei Teshuva. He emphasized that Erev Rosh Hashanah is just as important to the teshuva process as Erev Yom Kippur, as well as the Midrashic 3-step sin removal process. "On Erev Rosh Hashanah, one-third of our sins are removed," said Rabbi Felder. "During the Aseres Yimei Teshuva, one-third of our sins are removed. On Erev Yom Kippur, the final one-third of our sins is removed. Can you imagine that - a totally clean slate even before Yom Kippur?"

Rabbi Felder is no stranger to the halls of Stern Hebrew High School as he has spoken previously on the Yahrzheit of his Rebbe, Rabbi Moshe Feinstein, zt"l. So it was only a matter of time before Rabbi Felder strengthened his connection with us by offering his time and thoughts.

Rabbi Mordechai Wecker, a fellow talmid of Rav Feinstein zt"l, Stern Hebrew High School's new Head of School and the newest member of the community of Rhawnhurst (along with his family), was excited at the prospect of a community leader like Rabbi Felder visiting Stern. "Rabbi Felder spoke with great sensitivity," said Rabbi Wecker, "and offered both the appropriate halachic context for the Yomin Nora'im and practical suggestions as to how we can attempt to improve our Avodas HaShem. I personally gained much from the shiur."

Stern students are fortunate to be the beneficiaries of Torah knowledge and wisdom not only from our own teachers but from Rabbeim in the community. Also visiting us the following week was Rabbi Amiram Gabay, who spoke about the arba minim.

Stern Computer Lab Gets a "Make-Over"

Thanks to a generous matching grant from Pia and Stuart Pollack, the Stern Hebrew High School Computer Lab has received fifteen new state-of-the art computers and flat-screen monitors. Each is connected to the internet, making teacher-directed research a snap! The students, faculty and administration are deeply appreciative of the generosity of the Pollack’s in providing this much needed upgrade to our computer facilities. Many thanks also go to Shaya Gindoff and Barry Kritz, Stern Board members and co-chairmen of the IT Committee, for their many hours of unpacking, putting together and installing of all of the equipment.

Yearbook Ad Deadline: Tuesday, November 28th!

We look forward to this year’s school yearbook. It chronicles the daily life at our school, and it is a great way of preserving memories of the school, students and school life. We expect that the yearbook will be printed towards the end of the school year, but for this to happen, we must prepare now.

The production of the yearbook is costly. The school’s operating budget is limited and does not fund the yearbook. The cost of the yearbook is covered primarily by advertisements from supporters.

Putting an ad in the yearbook is a great way to support student life at the school and to send greetings to students, graduating students, and faculty. It is also a worthwhile way to promote and advertise local businesses.

This ad form and the PDF files on other this and other websites can be read or printed using the Adobe® Acrobat® Reader. If you do not have this software installed on your system, you may download it for free from Adobe's website.

The costs of ads are listed on the downloadable form. To place an ad, please return the form along with a check made out to “Stern Hebrew H.S. Yearbook.” Please give the form to a member of this year’s graduating class. Alternatively, it can be mailed directly to the school office to the attention of the yearbook advisor.

With sincere thanks for your support,
Daniella Evans & Micky Weinstein, Yearbook Editors
Raquel May, Yearbook Faculty Advisor

The creation of the State of Israel is one of the seminal events in Jewish history. Recognizing the significance of the State and its national institutions, we seek to instill in our students an attachment to the State of Israel and its people as well as a sense of responsibility for their welfare.
